Milan
in Italy
Internationally renowned as one of the most important fashion capitals, Milan is pulsating with a raw sense of creativity, design and sophistication.
Since its days as a mighty medieval city-state to the allied bombings of WWII that destroyed much of the city center, Milan has had a turbulent history. It has always seemed to bounce back, however, and today it’s established itself as Italy’s primary financial and industrial hub. The creative streak and ambitious appetite continue to position the northern Italian city as on the cutting-edge and forward-looking.
While Milan certainly houses some of Italy’s brightest and freshest minds of tomorrow, diving into the past of Italy’s second largest city is a fascinating experience. Surviving masterpieces such as the Duomo, Teatro alla Scala opera house and Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper tell the story of some of Europe’s most monumental achievements. There are also several museums that shouldn’t be missed. Between the seven historic museums housed in the historic Castello Sforzesco to the Rem Koolhaas-designed headquarters and exhibition space for Fondazione Prada. It should go without saying that getting your retail fix in Milan and the quadrilatero della moda is worth passing through, even if you won’t be dropping on some designer threads.
Milan has all the advantages of a major European city although it’s actually relatively small, especially within the city center where most sights, museums and restaurants can be visited on foot. The summer brings endless crowds to Italy and many businesses and restaurants close down for the month of August, making the shoulder seasons an ideal time to visit Milan. In direct contrast to the poor man’s cuisine of southern Italy, the gastronomic scene of Milan is instead the product of rich urban life. Much like the fashion scene, Michelin-starred hotspots, innovative fusion and upscale eateries seem to pop up all over Milan in a place that pushes culinary boundaries. This is a premier city to enjoy a sophisticated dining experience, just make sure you make a reservation in advance.
